Event Review: AppSense University 2014

On 11th and 12th June I attended the AppSense University 2014. In previous years, this annual event for consultants in the Benelux was always held in Houten (Netherlands). This year, AppSense chosen to merge this event with those of the UK making it an even larger event.

On the agenda were many good How-To, Best Practice and Deep Dive sessions. These included sessions like Environment Manager 8.5 Deep Dive, Understanding Environment Manager Debugging, Personalization Server Best Practice and many more.

In addition to the general sessions there were also breakout sessions on the agenda, which you could attend, based on your interest.

There is much said about improvements and new features in upcoming versions and I hereby give you a short overview of improvements and new features, which I’m excited about, and why you may consider updating when the new verison is released.

Management Server 8.6 (MS)

With the new AppSense Management Server 8.6 there will be a more intuitive suite installer. With the current version you have the option for a Standalone or Enterprise installation. This will be replaced with an Evaluation (for trail or PoC), Advanced (current enterprise option) or Client and Console only option. You also have the option to add more server instances to the installation to configure more instances at the same time.

Non-Persistent VDI support

AppSense Management Server 8.6 have now Non-Persistent VDI support! This means that you can configure the location of the configuration file, for example on a persistent location on a VDI (for example the D drive). The AppSense Client Communication Agent (CCA) can now pause the computer startup and wait until the configuration file is available so no reboot is ever needed anymore.

Environment Manager 8.5 (EM)

These are a lot new features in Environment Manager 8.5, one of the biggest change is about the Desktop Settings. The Desktop Settings is merged with the Session Data and is now called Windows Personalization.

Like Desktop Settings, Windows Personalization is configurable outside of the Personalization Groups. Items are grouped into collections like Active Setup or Explorer Settings and it provides specific device targeting, for example per Microsoft Windows version.

Logon triggers

The Logon trigger mechanism is now split into three sub-triggers;

– Pre-Session (runs when the user profile has been created)
– Pre-Desktop (like the current logon trigger)
– Desktop Created (runs when the desktop shell had been created)

Automatic Database clean out after exclusion

When there is a new exclusion added to an application or application group, the next time the user starts this application, all files in the database that are located on a new excluded location will be removed from the database for that user. So no more SQL scripts are needed for that! :-)

Copy function

Say goodbye to robocopy…. Here are the File & Folder actions including Copy, Delete, Move and Rename Files!

Application Manager 8.8 (AM)

The new Application Manager has lots of “under the hood” improvements and some new features. One of these features is the Emergency Change Request tool.

With this tool the end user can request an immediate configuration change, this can be over the phone or, with less urgent request, by mail. The administrator can give the requested permissions and optionally can specify a period for it.

Thanks

I would like to thank the AppSense University 2014 team that I could attend to this event. It was very informative for me, lots of technical deep dive and good variety between the sessions.

I hope to see you all next year!
